What do they do again?

The President

The President’s role is, believe it or not, the least specifically defined in The Constitution. Generally, however, the President must serve as the face of the entire Union and devote a large amount of his time to meeting with other student unions and any other body that would like to deal with the Union. The President’s most important task is to ensure that all the other councilors working under him are fulfilling their duties and offer his support to them if they require assistance. The President also serves as the third student representative on the University’s Board of Governors.

SEE THE PRESIDENT IF…

• You have general inquiries to make about any facet of the Union.

• You have questions about the operations of The Wardroom, King’s on-campus bar.

The Vice President (Student Life) - SLVP

The newly renamed Vice President (Student Life) takes over the duties of the President should he/she be unable to fulfill presidential duties. The main item that the VP-SL deals with is societies. The VP-SL must remain very familiar with the status of societies, new and old, and directly approves whether or not societies get ratified. The K-Points system, which you can learn more about here, is also looked after by the IVP. The IVP also acts as supervisor to the Health Plan Administrator, the CUBE Coordinator, and the Events Coordinator.

SEE THE VICE PRESIDENT (STUDENT LIFE) IF…
• You would like to create a society, or have any questions related to societies, including how to get access to the photocopier/printer.

• You have ideas and require guidance, mentorship or funding from the union.

• You would like information on eligibility for the K-Points system.

• You need to be put in touch with the Health Plan Administrator, the CUBE Coordinator or the Events Coordinator.

• You would like to receive photocopying privileges for your society.

The Vice President (Financial) - FVP

The Financial Vice President is responsible for the care and custody of the funds of the KSU. The FVP maintains complete and accurate accounting books for the Union. Cheques made out to anyone must be signed by the FVP and the IVP or President. The FVP meets as often as necessary with the Finance Committee, which discusses society funding. The FVP also supervises the Health Plan Administrator and the Yearbook Editor.

SEE THE FINANCIAL VICE PRESIDENT IF…

• You have any questions about the budget of the Union, and where your money is going.

• You would like to receive contingent funding for a society.

• You would like to know when your cheque for reimbursement is ready.

The Vice President (External) - EVP

The External Vice President is the position that offers the most flexibility. The EVP generally is concerned with external affairs that affect the student population at King’s. Thus, the EVP sits on the External Action Committee, which strives to raise awareness about important issues like tuition fees and participates in community activism. The EVP sits on the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) [of which King’s is a member] which pushes for government action against rising tuition fees in Nova Scotia and Canada as a whole. The EVP is interested in social justice and is networked to many different activist groups that can help you address anything from tenancy rights to gender/sexual/racial discrimination.

SEE THE EXTERNAL VICE PRESIDENT IF…

• You would like to take part in programs that benefit the community at large.

• You would like to know more about the workings of the CFS.

• You are interested in community activism.

The Vice President (Communications) - CVP

The Communications Vice President is responsible for all the intricate details that make sure the Union runs smoothly. The CVP keeps, assembles and sends out agendas and minutes for each council meeting, frequently updates bulletin boards around campus which inform students about the activities of the Union and the school as a whole, and puts out the weekly newsletter entitled This Week At King’s (TWAK), which lists all campus events by day for each week of the school year. TWAK is available on several bulletin boards on campus, by email and on this website. Office supplies are under their portfolio as well. The CVP works like a switchboard putting different people in touch with societies, student groups, faculty, committees, councilors and anyone else who may be able to help you out with your concern. The CVP is also responsible for much of the content on the Student Union Website and supervises the Handbook and Website Editors.

SEE THE COMMUNICATIONS VICE PRESIDENT IF…

• You would like to view the minutes of any council meeting.

• You would like to be notified of the date and location of the next council meeting.

• You would like to receive TWAK by email.
