Letter Regarding the New Athletics Fee

Dear KSU members,
We are writing to inform you of several recent developments concerning the participation of King's in the proposed athletics facility at Dalhousie University.
On November 18, the KSU Council approved the following referendum question: "Should the KSU support a University fee of $180 per student per year for a new athletics facility on the Studley campus of Dalhousie University, to be implemented following the opening of the facility?". The results of the referendum were to give direction to the King's Students' Union on that issue and to inform the KSU representatives on the University's Board of Governors, which was to vote on the proposed athletics fee at its November 29 meeting. A public forum on the issue was held on November 26, at which members of the University administration answered questions. Voting took place on November 27 and 28. The results were as follows: Yes, 79 votes; No, 245 votes; Abstentions, 21. The results of the vote were made public on November 28, and were brought to the Board of Governors on November 29. The Board of Governors was not under any obligation to take direction from the KSU referendum, and did in fact approve the proposed fee.

On December 2, the KSU Council held an in-camera (closed) discussion on the Union's response. The discussion was held in-camera so that debate would not be inhibited by the potential for the discussion to affect the Union's relationship with the University. As a result of that discussion, the following motion was made and passed: Be it resolved that the King’s Students’ Union announces its dissent from the recent Board of Governors decision to enact the new $180 per student athletics fee. Be it further resolved that this council empowers the KSU executive to take appropriate action beginning with a formal press release.

The KSU will continue to be directed by the results of the referendum, and the Executive and Council will continue to act on the matter in your interests. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact the KSU President (president@ksu.ca).
Thank you.
In solidarity,
The KSU Executive
