The KSU will hold a vote on whether or not King’s students will participate in the one-week Nova Scotia student strike, which runs from March 15-21.

On February 27, the KSU emailed the student body with a survey to gauge interest in having a strike vote and to hear questions and concerns. The survey closed on March 6th, as the results would be published and reviewed by Council on March 8th. On the Council agenda was a motion for Council to recommend that the KSU President either call or not call an SGM and strike vote.

On March 6th, the KSU received a petition requesting that the Union hold a Special General Meeting to discuss and hold a strike vote. The petition was signed by 100 King’s students, which is over 1/10th of the student body, automatically triggering an SGM per Section 8.1b of the KSU bylaws.

Strike Vote Timeline:

On Thursday, March 12, there will be a Special General Meeting running from 5-8pm in the Wardroom and online. Participants will discuss the strike motion and have the opportunity to make amendments to the motion and its demands. In accordance with Robert’s Rules (the procedure the KSU uses to run our meetings) and our bylaws, King’s students attending virtually will need to register for the SGM in advance. You may register at the door if you attend in person. Only those in attendance, in person or digitally, will be able to vote. To attend in person, students will need to bring their King’s ID, or if not possible, a government ID and your banner number (B00 or B01). To ensure a democratic process, only King’s students will be allowed to attend the meeting.

A meeting agenda will be posted here tomorrow. The meeting structure will look like: discussion, amendments to the strike motion, and then a vote on the updated motion. Those in person will vote via paper secret ballots. Those online, on Microsoft Teams, will vote via Teams. The KSU will email registrants and post on social media when the time for voting comes, to make sure that those who are registered but have to join late.
