Joining a committee is a great way to get more involved in the King’s community! To sit on any of the committees listed below for the 2025/26 academic year, please nominate yourself at the King’s Students’ Union Annual General Meeting on April 2nd, 2025! We would love to see you there (and need at least 50 students to attend to proceed with the meeting’s important motions), but nominations will also be accepted in writing to info@ksu.ca. Please include your name, pronouns (if you feel comfortable doing so), year, and a brief description of why you want to join the committee and what perspective you would bring.
KSU Committees:
These committees are run by the Union, so are entirely student-led. They focus on Union activities and improving the student experience and academics at King’s.
Academic Committee
Want to learn about academic issues that matter to you and advocate for changes in curriculum or academic accessibility for yourself and your peers? Nominate yourself for one of three (3) seats that are available on the Academic Committee!
Bylaw Review Committee
The KSU Bylaws are a set of rules that outline how the Union operates. Interested in reviewing and updating them to reflect current practices and/or make improvements to Union operations? Want to help make the bylaws accessible and understandable? Three (3) seats are available on the Bylaw Review Committee.
Elections Committee
This committee supports the Chief Returning Officer (CRO) in running KSU elections, by supervising the voting booth, and administering the strike policy in cases of breaches of elections procedure. The committee meets as needed during the fall and spring elections, (plus it looks good on a resume). Ten (10) seats are available.
Equity Affairs Committee
This committee has not been active for several years, but if you care about equity and would like to help bring it back please nominate yourself! Four (4) seats are available.
Description from the KSU Operations Policy: “The Equity Affairs Committee has a mandate to formulate and draft Union policy on issues of equity relating to race, gender, religion, physical and mental disability and sexual orientation. While not a disciplinary body, the Committee will receive and evaluate general equity complaints regarding the Union and the wider University. Complaints regarding individuals will be forwarded to the appropriate University bodies.”
Finance Committee
Want to keep the Union financially accountable by reviewing and voting on society funding requests, overseeing the Union’s financial transactions, books, and records, helping to create the KSU budget, and more? Three (3) seats are available on the Finance Committee.
Galley Advisory Board
Do you love the Galley as much as the Galley loves you? Join the Galley Advisory Board to help oversee the finances and operations of the Galley. Three (3) student seats are available.
Healthy Active Living Programming Coordinator Hiring Committee
This committee will interview applicants for the HALP Coordinator position for the 2025/26 academic year and recommend a candidate to Council for approval. The hiring process will begin immediately. Three general members sit on this committee. Two (2) student seats are available.
Standing Committee on BIPOC Excellence
This is a newly established committee, responsible for overseeing the BIPOC Excellence Scholarship Program. This program comprises three fixed scholarships— the Hilary Ilkay Scholarship, Parisa Zahiremami Scholarship, Nicole Go Scholarship—along with one rotating scholarship subject to change every year. Responsibilities of committee members include determining the purpose of the rotating scholarship, developing and revising an application process, selecting the recipients of these scholarships, and more broadly, advocating for equitable access to higher education for the King’s BIPOC community. The scholarship selection process will take place this August/early September. Three (3) student seats are available. Students who are nominated must be of racialized identity.
Student Workers Committee (Special Committee of the Union)
This committee is designated to advocate for student workers’ rights on campus. The goal is to have representatives from as many different groups of student workers as possible. The committee will not be limited to elected individuals, and anyone who holds a student job on campus will be welcome to attend and provide insights during the committee’s meetings. The committee is made up of five (5) seats, open to any student who works at King’s.
Wardroom Advisory Committee
Is the Wardy your favourite place on campus? You can get more involved with the business by joining the Wardroom Advisory Committee, which oversees and advises on the finances and business operation of the Wardroom. Two (2) student seats are available.
Watch Board of Publishers
Are you a journalism student, or otherwise interested in supporting student journalism, like The Watch, on campus? Join this board! Three (3) student seats are available.
WUSC (World University Service of Canada) Levy Board
This is the Board that meets to release the WUSC levy that the KSU collects on behalf of WUSC. The Dal and King’s WUSC societies have recently merged, and by sitting on this board, you would likely work to help complete this process. One (1) student seat is available.
King’s Committees:
King’s Athletics Director Hiring CommitteeIf you are a student athlete or are interested in helping hire the new Director of Athletics, you should sit on this committee! The group will meet soon to discuss the applicants and interview them. One student seat is available.
King’s Accessibility Advisory Committee
The Accessibility Advisory Committee created the Accessibility Plan, which is mandated by the provincial government, and seeks to make King’s campus fully accessible by 2030. The committee reviews this plan and recommends ways to implement it to the King’s President and Accessibility Officer. There are two student seats. One student seat is available for a two-year term, ending in the spring of 2027.
King’s Board of Appeal and Discipline
This committee hears appeals on non-academic disciplinary matters. There have been no appeals made in the past decade, so it is very unlikely to meet. In the case that it does, student representation is key. There is one (1) student representative seat.
King’s Dining Services Advisory Committee
Do you have a lot of opinions about Prince Hall? The Dining Services Advisory Committee provides feedback and recommendations to King’s dining services provider, informed by the nutritional, financial and social needs of the campus community. A University committee that has two (2) general student representative seats.
King’s Equity Committee
This committee has not been functional for many years. In the fall, a working group will be formed to completely update the Yellow Book, which will include restructuring this committee. In case it meets before those final recommendations are made, it is important for students to have a voice. Three (3) student seats are available.
King’s Journalism Discipline Committee
Deals with cases of academic offenses in relation to all classes within the School of Journalism. One (1) student representative seat is available. This seat must be held by a non-Journalism student.
King’s Occupational Health and Safety Committee
Makes decisions about health and safety procedures and regulations on King’s campus. A University committee that has one (1) general student representative seat.
King’s Orientation Committee
The is a new committee that hopes to be an intentional intersection of staff, faculty and students interested in understanding the orientation needs of students and designing a suite of orientation activities to meet those needs as best as possible. Committee requirements would be heaviest in spring/summer and almost non-existent in fall/winter. ***This does not replace Orientation Week which is run entirely by the KSU – the goal of this committee is to give King’s advice on how to better provide information to incoming students about residence, supports, campus life, and navigating the city. There are five general student seats.
King’s Standing Committee on Student Life
This Committee provides feedback regarding student health and safety, residence and campus services, and any other matters relating to overall student wellness. The committee also selects residence dons and the Assistant Dean of Residence Life, recommending candidates for hire to the Dean of Students. Students on the committee include the KSU Residence Representative, Student Life VP, Day Student Society Representative, and one general student representative.
King’s Sexualized Violence Prevention Implementation Advisory Committee
The SVPIAC is a group of staff, faculty, and student reps who work to ensure that the King’s Sexualized Violence policy is known, accessible, and provides the best support to all of our campus community members. Meetings are typically every other month for roughly an hour and a half (set each month by Doodle poll) and committee members are sometimes asked to take on tasks between meetings. Work includes policy review and revision, looking at how the values and processes embedded in the policy are practically implemented in our community, and supporting the work of the Sexual Health and Safety Officer. At times, SVPIAC members may also be asked to sit on Outcomes Panels, which review reports of sexualized violence and provide recommendations for outcomes to the President. Members of the SVPIAC are required to sign a confidentiality agreement. Three (3) student seats are available.
