The Wardroom
Hours of Operation: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday, from 8:00 pm – late
What is it?
The HMCS King’s Wardroom is YOUR campus pub! Student-run, student-managed, and student-owned (through your King’s Students’ Union), the Wardroom or “Wardy” is a gathering place for students, faculty, staff, alum, and their guests. Established in 1979 by the new Students’ Union, the Wardroom was founded to be a gathering place between King’s Residence and the classroom, where boundaries between upper years and first years broke down. Traditions have come and gone, from FYP Monday Open Mics, to Friday Happy Hour, Study night, to Wardy-only holidays like Hallo-Wardy, 2 Years Eve, and Last Class Bash. Common events are Trivia, local music acts, queeraoke, and more! Come by to the Wardy to enjoy these events, or to create a new tradition!
How to Find Us:
The Wardroom is located in the lower level of the Arts & Administration building. We’re wheelchair accessible via the elevator between the Link and the Mini Quad. We’re on the Lower Level, right through these fancy wooden doors! If you get turned about, don’t hesitate to ask a someone for directions!
Our License
One of the best things about the Wardroom is how it brings together students of all ages. Yes, it’s true, due to our special premises license, we are able to have underage King’s students in the bar during alcohol service! However, this amazing experience is only possible through strict compliance programs with both the University of King’s College and Nova Scotia Alcohol & Gaming Division.
The Space
The Wardroom is a members-only establishment. Are you a member? If you are enrolled at the University of King’s College, congratulations! You’re a member. You’re also a member if you live in residence (but if you move out, you’re no longer a member). Do not fret! You can bring guests from other institutions into the space! However, guests MUST be 19 years of age or older.
In the space, we have more rules than a usual bar and reserve the right to remove patrons for one night, suspend them for 4 months, or issue a one-year ban. Feel free to check out the code of conduct attached here to see a detailed list of prohibited actions in the licensed area. Removal may also be done on the grounds of “Anything detrimental to the orderly control of the establishment” at the discretion of bar staff
Getting In: What You Need to Know
We’ll need to confirm membership status and age before you enter. Please remember to have these things on hand:
-
King’s ID
-
Government Issued Photo ID
- Staff may request an additional form of identification that displays your name and date of birth to verify the accuracy of your government-issued ID.
If you have IDs with different names, we will always defer to the name on your King’s ID. However, we will ask for two pieces of ID to confirm your age!
Once we’ve validated you’re a King’s student who can or can’t drink, you’ll either get a stamp on the back of your dominant hand to show you’re allowed to drink, or you will have two x’s on the back of your hands done in permanent marker, plus a fluorescent yellow wristband on your dominant hand. Thanks for bearing with us through the process, and enjoy the bar!
Oversight and Democracy
The Wardroom receives an allocated portion of the Student Businesses Levy each year from student fees. Interested in the oversight of the Wardroom? You have two options: the Levy Release Board and the Wardroom Advisory Committee. Feel free to chat with a member of your KSU exec or email hc@ksu.ca to discuss your options with the Hospitality Coordinator!

The Galley
Hours of Operation: Monday – Friday, from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm
What is it?
The King’s Galley Inc is your student-run, student-managed and student-owned campus cafe! It is both a great spot to grab a coffee and a snack between classes, as well as a glowing example of how student organizing can produce real results. Founded after a successful boycott of the Chartwell’s canteen in 2011, the Galley was founded on a threefold mandate:
- Affordable food – bagels, samosas, muffins, grilled cheese and more!
- Local products whenever possible
- Meaningful employment
Don’t miss out on Free Soup every Wednesday! 11 am until supplies last.
How to Find Us:
The Galley is also located in the lower level of the Arts & Administration building. We’re wheelchair accessible via the elevator between the Link and the Mini Quad. We’re on the Lower Level, right through these fancy wooden doors, just to the right! If you get turned about, don’t hesitate to ask a someone for directions!
